Can meditation cause insomnia ?

by Eklavya on March 27, 2012

Some people suffers from depression and insomnia and it becomes a very serious problem for them.

As such meditation can be of immense helpful to such people. It not only helps them overcome the depression, it also helps them enjoy sound sleep.

It is in this context, I was surprise to know when someone asked me whether meditation can cause insomnia.

Though, it is certain that meditation can never result into insomnia, it is important to stop immediately and check if ‘what we are doing as meditation’ is actually meditation or a nerve wracking exercise that is increasing our tension.

As the saying goes, too much of everything is bad. So, one must be careful about his meditation practice and in case of any doubt he should quickly determine if it is helping him or proving otherwise.

For more information on meditation and the right way of doing it, you should read What is not meditation from our Meditation corner.

As far as my knowledge of meditation is concerned Meditation does not cause insomnia.

Meditation does not cause insomnia. On the contrary, it helps one fall asleep more easily.

Regular meditation calms the restlessness of the mind, and as such, when you go to sleep, there are less mental restlessness, and therefore, it is easier to fall asleep, and sleep deeply.
