Depression is considered as a dreaded mental condition wherein the person adopts an extremely negative outlook for the life, turn introvert, stops all kind of social interaction, retreats into a cocoon and starts living in his own sad world.

Basically, if you observe it carefully,  depression is a state of helplessness. It emanates from the condition when one found himself in a total helpless situation, something he is unable to change by any means.

Depression is the result of a series of mental setbacks, failures and disappointments in one’s personal or professional life.

For the outsiders, it is only s sorry state of affairs which can be overcome with positive and persistent effort. However, for the person who is actually suffering from depression, it appears to be a never ending situation.

As a result, the person surrenders himself to his fate and stop making any effort to better his situation. You can say that in this state of mental depression, the feeling of helplessness become extremely dominant and powerful.

So is there any hope through meditation ? Well here is a four steps strategy :

Proper Medication

First of all, let me clarify that depression is not an easy problem and it should never be taken lightly.

If you or someone close to you is suffering from depression, you must understand that it is actually a dreaded mental ailment which can wreak havoc in your life.

So first of all, recognize this fact: Depression can cause very serious damage to your life.

So take immediate action and consult a qualified doctor for taking proper medication. It is really really important.

Be Physically Active

Apart from consulting your doctor and discussing with him the problem you are facing on mental front, you must make some important changes in your life.

Your body was not designed to sit idle and indulge in sedentary activities. It was designed to do as much physical work as it can. If you are not doing any physical exercise these days: start now.

If you are suffering from meditation, it is uber important to do some kind of exercise.

Do yoga, aerobic, weights or push ups.

If you can’t do these, at least go for a walk in the morning.

Move your body. Make it do some physical work.

Be Social

Thirdly,  don’t live in a cocoon. Be social.

Being introvert is not bad. But having a few friends is always better than none at all.

Man is a social animal. Being social make us feel worthwhile.

If you can’t go outside, go online. Open a Facebook page, Start twitter or just hang out on zillions of social websites. Make some contact.

Make some friends.

Remember the world is full of bad people. You will find cruel, insensitive, selfish and mean people in every corner of earth.

However, on the other side of coin, you will also find loving, caring, selfless, altruist, sincere, down-to-earth and helpful people on that very corner of earth.

A man or woman with a heart of gold may be only a click away.

Well in essence, go social. Even, if it is in a limited way, go social.

Finally, start meditation.

If I tell you the truth, Meditation is just like a prayer.

Meditation may not change the things for you…but it will certainly change YOU for the things.

Meditation helps you understand your true nature.

It helps you realize the banalities of the world. The uselessness of many things you might be craving for today.

It helps you understand the ephemeral character of life.

It teaches you that no matter how dreaded, sad, disappointing and bleak the present circumstances is, in the ultimate analysis ‘THIS TOO WILL PASS’.

Meditation makes you realize this ongoing play of existence called life.

So Meditate.

In conclusion:

To overcome you depression :

(1) Take proper medication from a qualified doctor,

(2) Start some kind of physical exercise,

(3) Be social; and

(4) Meditate.

The above four shall make a speedy recovery.

Being social is a lot more important when it comes to staying away from depression or when dealing with it. In my experience people who do not get support from friends, family and the society in general tend to be the victims of depression. A very young cousin who lives with her parents and siblings is getting treated for acute depression because she could not perform well in studies while her other siblings were always appreciated by her parents for their excellent grades. I think we need to learn why people close to us get trapped in this and find ways to get rid of such behaviors.

Thank you for this post. Someone very close to me is suffering from depression and I found this four step strategy very helpful. Last time it (the depression) occurred he took up meditation but then let it fall aside again when he felt better. Then the other things also slip away. Somehow I think meditation is the most important of all – the key.
