This practice of silence is so beautiful. When I first began meditating I had a very difficult time separating myself from my thoughts and I ended up feeling like I had failed.

It took a while to get over that feeling and begin to leave myself and find myself in a true meditative state.

This technique is a great way to get started and is virtually failure-proof in the sense that distraction is an acceptable part of the meditation.

Thank you for this great post!

Living in New York City, I rarely get to actually interact/experience nature organically. It's tough because as beautiful as the parks/botanical gardens are they have an air of artificiality because they are surrounded by buildings and a layer of smog that permeates the air.

This post rings so true for me because I find that if I don't get out into "the real thing" at least once a month, I feel like something is missing.

I'd love your thoughts on how people stuck in a city can find nature within themselves or in man-made "nature".

@Joe,
If you really relax and give up any idea of controlling the process, you m ight start to feel a presence within you that you did not create that is bigger than you. Then if you start to move in the direction of this presence, you might come to an actual, tangible, real experience of God. You might alos try ont he fact that if there was a Being that created you, then that Being would know every part of you and would understand you and hope good things for you. Peace is fine, but we can fool ourselves into thinking we created that peace. We need something deeper than this who created the peace that we are able to feel.

I agree that suicide is never the answer but sometimes people get into such dispair that they are unable to see the bigger picture.

It's a shame these things sometimes happen because of financial strain. With a bit of support and realisation, those who committed suicide may have learnt to appreciate that the best things in life are free.

It's so true that many people take the beauty of nature for granted. We're surrounded by it everyday but somehow in our busy lives many forget to appreciate just how special it is.

I for one will make sure that, for today at least, i will take a pause from my daily activities and take a walk in the park. :-)
